International Singing Competition (Neue Stimmen)

With its Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition, the Bertelsmann Stiftung aims to:

- seek out young opera singers, select the most promising talent and sponsor their artistic training
- give these rising talents an opportunity to present themselves before an audience of experts
- promote dialogue and exchange among young artists with different cultural, national, and religious backgrounds

Marina Rebeka from Latvia is the NEUE STIMME 2007

Gütersloh, October 28, 2007. Marina Rebeka (27) from Latvia has won first prize, which carries a cash award of €15,000, at the Bertelsmann Stiftung's 12th NEUE STIMMEN International Singing Competition.The soprano won over the international jury headed by Francisco Araíza with a performance of the arias "Qual fiamma" from the opera "I Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo and "È strano, è strano" from Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata". Second prize (€10,000) was awarded to the 21-year-old Argentinian bass Fernando Javier Radó, while tenor Diego Torre (27) from Mexico won third prize and €8,000. 1,100 young singers from 66 nations had auditioned in preliminary rounds held around the world, 47 had qualified for the final round in Gütersloh.

Who will be the "new voice" - NEUE STIMME - for 2007?

Eight young opera singers are competing in the finals of the 12th NEUE STIMMEN International Singing Competition, sponsored by the Bertelsmann Stiftung. At 7 o'clock this evening they will be singing at Stadthalle Gütersloh, hoping to win first prize and the 15,000 euros that goes along with it. The jury, headed by interim chairman Francisco Araiza, will select the "new voice" - NEUE STIMME - for 2007.

NEUE STIMMEN 2007: 16 opera singers reach the semifinals

In reality they are all winners - the 46 young opera talents who successfully made it to the final round of Bertelsmann Stiftung's 12th NEUE STIMMEN International Singing Competition. They managed to outperform 1,100 co-competitors in the worldwide preliminary rounds. The star-studded jury, provisionally headed by Francisco Araiza, has now chosen 16 of them to move on to the semifinals.
