School

A girl writing

Our guiding principle is the necessity of taking responsibility for oneself and for others. This applies to children, adolescents and adults as well as to institutions. Through our projects, we committed to helping schools develop and improve. Our main focus is fostering independence, developing systematic support systems and encouraging dialogue in the school community.

School development

The Bertelsmann Stiftung has been working to improve quality in schools and the education system since the 1990s. We at the foundation believe that efforts to improve schools and teaching need to focus on three key elements: greater autonomy for schools, systematic evaluation processes and effective support systems for the schools. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is working together with education authorities from North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg on pilot projects testing and expanding school autonomy in regional education networks.

Educational regions

When it comes to educational opportunities for children and young people, schools are not the only ones that need to act, but entire cities and regions as well. Our next generation can only develop its full potential if everyone involved in the education system-both on the inside and the outside-works together. This means that regional education networks  are key to success in learning.

Good and healthy schools

Musical primary school

Numerous studies demonstrate that actively making music contributes significantly to developing children's learning skills and social behavior. Unlike programs that aim to strengthen music education itself, a Musikalische Grundschule (Musical Primary School) incorporates music into classroom instruction across the curriculum and throughout the day.

A new day dawning for education

Economics affects our day-to-day life. Globalization, paying for retirement, the new culture of independence, EU enlargement to the east, Hartz IV-without having a basic knowledge of economics it is impossible for us to orient ourselves, form opinions about or make decisions regarding a career path.
