Better lifelong learning

Our country cannot compete internationally without a top-notch educational system. Demographic shifts are making the need for innovation even more urgent. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is working toward fundamental education reform in Germany. The foundation's efforts address the various stages and locations of lifelong learning.

Focus areas

School

Our fundamental tenet is that each individual must take active responsibility for him- or herself, as well as for others. This applies in equal measure to children, young people, adults and institutions. Through our projects, we are involved with curriculum and school development. Our work focuses on strengthening autonomy, developing systematic support systems and encouraging dialogue within the school community.

Higher education

The higher education system is in flux-with new bachelor's and master's programs taking shape, tuition requirements on the way, pay scales for professors becoming more flexible and performance-based, and the government giving universities more autonomy in their use of funding. The CHE Center for Higher Education Development is active in all these areas and has pushed for many of the higher education reforms.
